BEATRICE — The South Sioux City boys cross country team fell one point short of qualifying for the state cross country meet.
While the Cardinal teams won't make it to state, both will have individul qulaifiers.
The Cardinal boys finished fourth out of six teams in a close team race at Thursday’s B-2 district race, just missing out on being one of the three teams that will compete in next week’s state race in Kearney.
The four scoring runners for SSC ran in a close group and were led by Nabiil Yussuf, who earned an individual bid to state with a ninth-place time of 17:23.1.
Following Yussuf were Angel Vargas Vazquez in 13th, Michael Munambi in 14th and Caleb Preciado in 15th. Also running were Damian Lozano, who placed 16th, and Gavin Joy, who finished 26th.
The Lady Cardinals were fifth in their six-team race. Kalianne Norton was the first SSC girl home, finishing 13th to punch her state ticket. She was followed by Abigail Cisneros (20th), Payton DeRochie (25th), Dulce Alonso (31st), Arianna Escobedo (33rd) and Jasmine Orozco-Ixcol (35th).
Both Norton and Yussuf will run in the Class B races at the Nebraska State Cross County Championships, set for Friday, Oct. 23 in Kearney.
