South Sioux City firefighters have scheduled a controlled burn training exercise on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m.
The training will take place at a vacant residence located near the intersection of Dakota Avenue and 48th Street. This training exercise is weather dependent. A final go/no-go decision will be made at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
Multiple area fire departments have been invited to participate in this training opportunity. The exercise will provide firefighters with valuable hands-on observation and instruction involving fire behavior and suppression techniques. Training objectives will include understanding thermal dynamics, utilizing thermal imaging cameras, and evaluating hose stream management.
All training activities will be conducted from the exterior of the vacant structure. No interior firefighting operations will take place.
Residents and motorists in the area should be aware of the following:
— A significant amount of black smoke may be visible during the exercise.
— Southbound Dakota Avenue traffic will be reduced to one lane near the training location.
— The primary training portion is expected to be completed within approximately two hours. Fire department personnel and apparatus may remain on scene for an additional four to six hours.
The South Sioux City Fire Department appreciates the public's patience and understanding as they conduct this important training exercise, and would like to give a special thank you to the Krogh family for providing this opportunity. These opportunities help ensure our firefighters remain prepared to safely and effectively serve
our community.
