Tyson Fresh Meats will pay nearly $28,000 in fines for violations found after a fatal accident at its Dakota City plant earlier this year.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Tyson Fresh Meats for failing to clearly outline energy control procedures involving a machine that crushed a worker Jan. 6. Tyson will pay a total of $27,790 for two violations found during its investigation.
According to the OSHA report, a maintenance employe was lying under a machine that moves products on to pallets or boxes when an electronic sensor was activated, lowering the machine and crushing the worker.
OSHA also reported that Tyson had not ensured that all authorized employees had been trained in the machine’s correct lockout procedures.
