A head-on collision on Highway 110 Sunday evening claimed the life of a Wakefield woman.
According to the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. when a GMC Sierra pickup driven by Alejandro Mena Vallecillo, 47, of Wakefield, collided with a Honda Odyssey drive by Lakin Tompkins, 24, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
The two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on Highway 110 when one appeared to cross the center, colliding with the other vehicle. Heavy rain was a factor in the accident.
Rescue personnel from Dakota City and South Sioux City extricated individuals from both vehicles at the scene and began life-saving measures.
Vallecillo’s wife, Eva, 44, died as a result of the crash. Vallecillo and a minor child were taken to a Sioux City hospital with injuries. Vallecillo is listed in stable condition while the minor child was treated and has been released.
Tompkins was also taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to the report.
The accident continues to be under investigation by the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol.
