It was a rough go for the South Sioux City basketball teams during Friday's opening-round action in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout at Wayne State College.
In girls action, the Lady Cardinals played Pierce close in the first half, but the Lady Bluejays pulled away in the second half for a 47-25 win.
Abby McCoy hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the game and SSC was down 27-16 at the half. Pierce put the game away in the third period, outscoring SSC 12-2 to come away with the win.
McCoy and Keyana Weaver both had six points to pace the 2-5 Lady Cards. Paizley Aldrich added five points, Autumn Porter and Bryleigh Robinette each had three and Braelee Groves scored two.
The SSC girls will face Hartington Cedar Catholic in consolation action Saturday at 9 a.m. at Wayne State College’s Rice Auditorium.
The SSC boys battled Pierce throughout the game in their first-round matchup, but the Bluejays pulled away late to claim a 56-42 win.
SSC battled Pierce close and were within two at 36-34 going to the final period, but the Bluejays hit some key shots down the stretch to come up with the win, dropping SSC to 3-4 on the season.
Prestin Blackhawk led the Cardinals with 12 points and Paul Turner added 11. Also scoring were Caden Painter with seven, Ahmed Mohamed with six, Jaden Painter with four and Jamison Houseman with two.
SSC will play Hartington Cedar Catholic in consolation action Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rice Auditorium.
