The South Sioux City softball team dropped its season opener Thursday with a 14-1 loss to Omaha Mercy at Cardinal Park.
Mercy jumped on the Lady Cards early with five first-inning runs. They scored in each inning and ended the game after four innings on the mercy rule, outhitting SSC 6-1.
SSC’s lone run came in the fourth when Lindsey Loos led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a ground out and wild pitch before scoring on Emily Torres’ grounder to second base.
Ximena Ramirez’ fourth-inning single was SSC’s lone hit in the game. Nora Hirsch tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at home to end the contest.
Paisyn Ross pitched all four innings for SSC, striking out six.
SSC is playing in the Freeman Invitational on Saturday in Lincoln.
