A South Sioux City firefighter was injured during a fire call late Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a residential fire in the 500 block of East 25th Street about 5:07 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a release from the South Sioux City Fire Department. The fire originated on the back deck, where one of the occupants had been cooking before briefly leaving the property. Upon returning, the occupant found the house already on fire.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within about 20 minutes and seven people who were in the house at the time of the fire were able to get to safety.

During an overhaul at the scene, a section of the ceiling of the residence collapsed, injuring a SSC firefighter. The firefighter, whose name was not released, suffered serious neck injuries and was taken to Mercy One Hospital in Sioux City.

SSC Fire Chief Doug Koopman told the Dakota County Star Friday morning that the firefighter had been released from the hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.

Estimates on the damage of the home were not available, but the fire did cause significant damage rendering the residence uninhabitable. The seven people who resided there are staying with family members in the area.

Sioux City Fire Rescue and Dakota City Fire Department were called in for mutual aid.
