SSC athletes compete in state track

OMAHA — South Sioux City came away empty-handed on the first day of competition in the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Burke Stadium.

Junior Somarah Watts got the day started with a best mark of 14 feet, 11 1/4 inches in the Class A girls long jump, which did not qualify for the finals.

Sophomore Braelee Groves also competed in the preliminaries of the Class A girls discus, finishing with a best throw of 92-1.

Senior Madelynn Bohnet, who medaled in the Class A girls pole vault last year, didn’t make it to the final eight this year, settling for 16th place with a best vault of 9 feet.

Closing out the first day was the boys 3,200-meter team of Luke McGinty, Mel Munzambi, Leandro Magana and Yahir Mejia. They finished 16th in a time of 8:19.37.

Action continues Wednesday in Class A, with Angel Vargas Vazquez competing in the boys pole vault at 9 a.m. and Mcginty running in the boys 800-meter run at 1:30 p.m.
