Rescue efforts yielded no results Monday as officials from three fire and rescue units worked all day in an effort to locate a missing 23-year-old woman who disappeared into the Missouri River late Sunday afternoon.
A news release late Monday afternoon by South Sioux City Fire Chief Doug Koopman said that water- and land-based searches by South Sioux City, Dakota City and Sioux City fire departments were conducted Monday morning and afternoon along the river between a location on the east edge of the Dible Soccer Complex to the boat ramps near Cottonwood Cove Park in Dakota City.
The individual was last seen at approximated 5:33 p.m. Sunday after wading about 10 feet into the river near the soccer complex on the river’s west (Nebraska) side, where she was swept under by the river current and did not resurface.
Authorities searched for about three hours Sunday and resumed the search Monday morning, searching for about two hours from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Another search was held from 2-4 p.m. Monday between the point where the woman was last seen to the Highway 20 bridge. South Sioux City firefighters searched along the shore while Sioux City and Dakota City conducted water-based searches on both sides of the river to the Dakota City public boat ramp, but could not find anything.
Koopman said the search has concluded, and they have notified the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, who will continue to monitor the river during their regular patrols. If any new information becomes available, he said that will be provided to the public.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the missing individual during this profoundly
difficult time,” Koopman said. “We also wish to thank all responding agencies for their professionalism, collaboration, and compassion throughout this operation.”
