COUNCIL BLUFFS — To say it was a good weekend for South Sioux City senior Tony Palmer would be something of an understatement.
Palmer dominated the 32-man bracket over the weekend at 215 pounds, going 3-0 in pool play on Friday and rolling through Saturday’s 16-man Gold bracket to claim the title at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid-America Center.
Palmer recorded two pins and a technical fall in Friday’s round-robin portion of the touranment, capping the day with a 30-second fall over Lowell Knott of Treynot (Iowa). He opened bracket action Saturday with a 31-second pinning of Alec Newell of Kearney, then had back-to-back technical falls before finishing the day with a 7-2 win over Glenwood’s Mason Koehler to improve to 18-0 on the season.
The defending Class B 215-pound champion capped his weekend by being named to the All-Nebraska second team football listing by the Omaha-World Herald after a senior season that saw him rush for a Class A-best 1,394 yards and 20 touchdowns to help the Cardinals finish a 5-4 season and just missed making the playoffs.
South Sioux had three wrestlers competing in the Council Bluffs Classic. Adrien Curiel went 1-4 at 190 pounds while Darrius Helms was 2-5 in the 285-pound weight class.
