One dead, one injured in Sunday crash

An Iowa man driving the wrong way on Highway 77 was killed in an accident at the Kingsbury Interchange Sunday evening.

According to the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, a two-vehicle accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the Kingsbury Intechange on Highway 77 at about 8:07 p.m. Sunday evening.

A 2011 Toyota Camry, driven by Nel Doh Htoo, 38, of Storm Lake Iowa, was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it struck a southbound 2018 Jeep Compass driven by Elsa Pena-Lopez, 32, of Dakota City.

Htoo’s vehicle started on fire in the engine compartment area after the collision. Htoo died at the scene. Pena-Lopez and her four-year-old son were taken to Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital. She was treated and released, while her son was flown to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where he remains in critical condition.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, along with Dakota Covington Voluntary Rescue and South Sioux City Rescue, responded to the scene. Sheriff’s deputies at the scene were assisted by South Sioux City Police, the Nebraska State Patrol and rescue units from Sioux City and Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

The accident remains under investigation.
