New Stage Players features musical about 9/11 event

If you’re old enough, you still remember where you were on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The world seemed to stop on that fateful Tuesday morning when the United States of America came under attack, and while there are many stories and memories from that day, an upcoming musical at the New State Performing Arts Center tells an unusual story about a Canadian community that helped strangers cope in the days after that terrorist attack.

New Stage Players will present “Come From Away,” a Tony Award-winning musical, with a 10-show run this month at the New Stage Performing Arts Center, located at 3201 Dakota Ave.

The play is based in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, a community that literally doubled in size overnight when 38 planes that were in the air at the time of the attacks were diverted to the small community of about 9,000.

The community opened its heart to nearly 7,000 stranded airline passengers as the planes found the community’s airport. In the midst of uncertainty and fear, a tiny community showed the world the power of kindness, unity, and hope.

Filled with soaring music, heartfelt storytelling, and unforgettable characters, Come From Away has become one of the most celebrated musicals of the modern era. Audiences across the globe have embraced its message of compassion and humanity. It is a story that celebrates resilience, generosity, and the extraordinary kindness of ordinary people.

The production features 12 talented local cast members who portray 84 different characters, including:

— Lindsy Bottger
— James Clakely
— Billy Denker
— Jeremy Hess
