New center at YMCA gets first look

In an exciting milestone for Siouxland, donors who have contributed to the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA Early Learning and Youth Development Center expansion were given an exclusive first look at the new state-of-the-art facility last Tuesday.

Attendees experienced firsthand the vibrant ocean-themed indoor playground, innovative early learning classrooms, and dynamic flex spaces tailored for teen programming.

"This expansion is more than just a building,” said Rhonda Robson, YMCA CEO. “It’s a place designed to nurture potential, inspire dreams, and empower every child and teen who walks through our doors. We're creating a foundation for lifelong success and community strength."

When Robson became the CEO of the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA in 2018, she immediately reached out to the community to identify gaps the YMCA could help fill. Through these conversations, Rhonda discovered that Siouxland faced a significant childcare shortage. Determined to address this critical need, she collaborated with the Y’s Board of Directors and community leaders to bring this visionary project to life.

Board Member Dan Heffernan emphasized the transformative impact of the project, highlighting the collective effort and commitment that made this vision a reality.

"Thanks to the generous support of our community, we're building a brighter future for Siouxland’s youth,” he said. “This center will serve as a hub for innovation, growth, and connection for generations to come."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for April 25, at 11 a.m., and the entire community is warmly invited to join the celebration.

The Early Learning & Youth Development Center, set to open fully in the coming months, still needs community support to cross the finish line. YMCA officials said that the project is still about $890,000 short of its $5 million goal.
