Authorities from four law enforcement organizations combined to bring a local man to justice Monday evening.
According to a release from the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, the South Sioux City Police Department put out a lookout notice in reference to a black 2015 Chevy Impala that was being driven recklessly in the community and had been involved in two hit-and-run accidents.
At around 7:35 p.m., the vehicle was observed in a lane violation and a Dakota County deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop. The vehicle fled and traveled through a red light at Ninth Street and Dakota Avenue and attempted to cross the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. Another Dakota County deputy was able to deploy a tire deflation device, which made contact with the front tires of the suspect vehicle before it continued across the bridge into Sioux City.
Multiple traffic infractions were observed as the chase continued into a vacant lot east of Floyd Boulevard, but the vehicle returned to Floyd Boulevard and the pursuit continued, with Woodbury County deputies using a vehicle intervention maneuver to disable the vehicle.
The suspect, Abass H. Abdirahman, 35, of South Sioux City, resisted efforts to remove him from the vehicle and the Sioux City Police Department’s K-9 dog was employed. The suspect was observed inhaling compounds referred to as “Whip Its and Galaxy Gas” at the time of the incident and continued to resist law enforcement after removal from the vehicle before eventually being placed into custody.
Both Abdirahman and a Dakota County deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident. The officer was treated and released and Abdirahman was treated and was taken to the Woodbury County Jail. He faces multiple charges in Iowa and a warrant is pending here in Dakota County.
