Middle School art teacher to retire after 40 years

In a building where bells dictate the pace and laptops follow students from class to class, there is one room where time feels different.

In Tracia Blom’s art room at the middle school, students settle in. They pick up pencils, brushes, and charcoal. They create. They talk. They listen to music — often something timeless, like Phil Collins, Frank Sinatra, or the Beatles. And, for a little while, they get a chance to step away from screens and express themselves creatively.

After nearly four decades of teaching, Blom has become a fixture in South Sioux City — one of those educators whose influence stretches far beyond the walls of her classroom. She has taught generations of students, watched the district evolve, and helped shape the identity of what is now a true middle school.

Blom will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year after 40 years in South Sioux City Community Schools.

“The best thing about the art room,” Blom said, “is I’ve shown kids they can trust adults. There is solid support. They feel valued in here. They feel respected.”

Middle School Principal Laura Sulzbach said that environment has been the hallmark of Blom’s career.

“After 40 years of teaching art in our district, we are so grateful for the incredible impact she’s had on generations of students,” Sulzbach said. “She created a calm, welcoming classroom while still holding students to high expectations and helping them grow in their creativity and confidence. Her dedication and steady presence will be missed.”
