WEST POINT — Scoring bonus points is important in a close dual — and so is giving them up.
Only one of the 33 matches South Sioux City’s wrestled went the full six minutes, but that one match proved to be the difference in the Lady Cardinals’ fifth-place finish in the Class A bracket of the NSWCA Girls State Duals.
The Lady Cards dropped a 54-30 dual to eventual runner-up Millard South in the opening round and rebounded with a 54-30 win over Omaha Westview, then came away with a tightly-contested 42-40 win over Omaha Bryan in a dual that came down to the final match.
And while Madelynn Bohnet’s first-period pin put the Lady Cards over the top, it was a loss earlier in the dual that left the door open for SSC’s girls to claim a team victory.
Lysandra Torres got behind early and was nearly pinned by Yulissa Ventura in their 155-pound bout. Torres was able to avoid the pin, however, and even though she dropped a 16-6 major decision, the loss only cost four team points, rather than six for a pin.
“That’s what we preach all the time in duals,” coach Evan Bohnet said after the dual. “We don’t want to give up those bonus points, and if you get someone on their back you finish it. (Lysandra) really took it to heart and I know it’s not the result she wanted, but she was a big part of why we won the dual.”
South Sioux City got pins from Rachel Chavez (110), Paloma Lemus-Magana (115), Mia Caro (135), Stephanie Selgado (145), Zulema Godinez (190) and the top-ranked Bohnet at 105 to earn the win over the Lady Bears.
In the opening-round loss to Millard South, South Sioux scored with pins by Bohnet, Ariadne Rocha (115), Caro, Torres and Godinez.
Winners in the win over Westview included Bohnet, Rocha, Fatima Alvarez (120), Selgado and Torres, along with four Westview forfeits.
“A lot of girls sacrificed for us to get fifth today,” Bohnet said. “We had some girls bump up a weight class and were very selfless in doing that, and that’s fun when you can move people around and compete as a team.”
The team has one more tournament Saturday in Cedar Bluffs before next week’s district tournament in Plattsmouth, and Bohnet said they’ll try to get everybody healed up for the state tournament qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 8.
“We really need to get healed up,” he said. “Nobody is at 100 percent right now, so we want to get the girls as close as we can to 100 percent and get ready for districts.”
