Kleinberg to step down as Dakota County Sheriff

Citing frustration with a variety of issues, longtime Dakota County Sheriff Chris Kleinberg told the Dakota County Star on Monday that he’s had enough.

Kleinberg, 60, is stepping down as the county’s top cop effective at the end of this year, ending a 25-year career in law enforcement that has included the last 14 as the Dakota County Sheriff. He began his career in law enforcement as a deputy in Thurston County in 1999 and eventually became sheriff there in 2007, a position he held for four years before being elected to the Dakota County position in 2011.

Kleinberg said that he has become frustrated with a number of issues within the county’s government system, to the point where he said it was starting to affect his health and well-being.

“I’m just burned out on fighting it,” Kleinberg said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “There are a lot of factors, and for so many years I’ve sat and watched this and it’s just become too much.”
