The Dakota County Star has started the “Project Warm Hearts” winter coat drive with Haven House Family Services Center in South Sioux City to help out those whose lives have been impacted by sexual assault or domestic violence.
The Star is looking for gently used coats, gloves and hats of any size, from infant to adult 4XL, that will be given to Haven House Family Services Center to help their clients with their cold-weather needs this winter.
“We are very sensitive about the needs of those who have, or are dealing with, domestic violence or sexual assault and want to help out in any way we can,” publisher Michael Carnes said. “Haven House has always been a great support system for those whose lives have been rocked by domestic violence or sexual assault, and we hope this effort will help those who need winter-weather wear to stay warm during these always-freezing winter months ahead.”
Requested materials can be brought to the Dakota County Star office, located at 1000 West 29th Street, Suite 215A, during the newspaper’s regular business hours, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Star’s offices are closed on Fridays, but Carnes said people can still drop them off “if the lights in the office are on Fridays. Just knock on the door and we’ll take care of it.”
Small acts have big impacts, and the Project Warm Hearts effort will help those who are experiencing violence in South Sioux City, Dakota County and the entire five-county region that Haven House Family Service Center covers.
Carnes encourages the community to “share the warmth this winter and be the light that helps to spark change in our area.”
