The Dakota County Board of Commissioners began the process of hiring a new sheriff at Monday’s meeting in the Dakota County Courthouse.
Chris Kleinberg tendered his resignation effective Dec. 30, 2025, and the commissioners voted to begin advertising this week for his replacement. The ad will run in the Dakota County Star and on the Nebraska Association of County Officials website, and the county will take applications through Thursday, Jan. 22.
Board members Brian VanBerkum and Rick Bousquet will represent the board on the committee that will handle interviews with perspective applicants and will report back to the board in early February for a final decision. Board chairman Marty Hohenstein told the Star that he hopes to make an official appointment by Feb. 17.
Chief Deputy Tim Decker will serve as acting sheriff until the hiring is made.
In other action, the board voted to continue with Hohenstein serving as board chair and Bousquet as vice chair.
Complete coverage of Monday’s meeting will be in this week’s Dakota County Star.
