City to look for wastewater director

Construction on the addition to South Sioux City’s wastewater treatment plant is ahead of schedule, and they will be looking for a director very soon.

At Monday’s Public Works committee meeting, the committee recommended moving forward with a request by City Administrator Lance Hedquist to advertise for a water/sewer director who would oversee the plant, which opened in 2024 and will see completion of an addition in early 2027 that will allow the city to treat its own wastewater, rather than sending it to Sioux City.

Ethan Joy of JEO said that work on the plant and the infrastructure that will allow the city to move residential and commercial wastewater to the plant is ahead of schedule.
“All the walls on the buildings are up and the underground piping is 99 percent done, so things are proceeding quite well,” he said at Monday’s meeting.

The project has a July 2027 completion date, but Joy said that if they stay ahead of schedule, it will probably be ready by early spring.

Hedquist asked the committee to be able to go ahead and advertise for an individual who would be in charge of the wastewater treatment plant and would also help with the city’s water and sewer departments. Hiring someone would be cheaper than contracting with a company, although the company’s engineer could be used as a backup.

The motion to approve the request passed on a 3-0 vote, with Councilwoman Yahaira Schultz absent from Monday’s meeting.
