Cardinals fall in A-5 final

South Sioux City’s hopes for a spot in the state soccer tournament took a double shot as their season has come to an end.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals dropped a 3-1 decision to Elkhorn South in the A-5 district finals.

Even with the loss, which ended its season at 13-5, the Cardinals still had a chance at the wild card spot in the eight-team bracket, but needed three results to move into that spot.

Two of the three outcomes happened, as Omaha Westside defeated Omaha Central 3-2 in the A-7 district final on Wednesday and Omaha Skutt posted a 3-0 shutout of Omaha Roncalli in the B-2 final Friday night.

The third result, however, was not the outcome they wanted as Lincoln East beat Lincoln Southeast 3-1 in the A-3 final. Southeast was higher in the wild card standings than South Sioux City before the finals, and with the loss will take the final spot, leaving SSC on the outside looking in.
