The Nieman family were hoping to bomb some bugs in their house, but got a little more than they bargained for.
South Sioux City firefighters were called to a residence at 323 West 23rd Street around noon Thursday and discovered that the front and west side windows of the house were blown out after Jamie Nieman set off a “bug bomb,” which is an aerosol-related device meant to eliminate insects and other pests in a home.
SSC Fire Chief Doug Koopman said a pilot light caused the explosion as several “bug bombs” were being set off in the house, owned by Dan and Jamie Nieman.
A small fire in the kitchen was put out immediately after firefighters arrived on the scene.
Mrs. Nieman was just leaving the house when the explosion occurred. An occupant in the house suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
