The body of a woman who was believed to have been pulled under by the current of the Missouri River here Sunday was found late Tuesday afternoon along the river between Onawa, Iowa and Decatur, NE, about 30 miles south of where she disappeared.
In a release from Sgt. Clint Nelson of the South Sioux City Police Department released Tuesday evening, the SSCPD was notified that a body was recovered on the Missouri River in the areas of Onawa, Iowa and Decatur, Neb. The Monona County (Iowa) Sheriff’s Office was contacted about 5:25 p.m. with the report that a boater on the river had discovered the body.
The body was recovered via rescue boat by the Decatur Fire Department. In a joint investigation with the SSCPD and the Monona County Sheriff’s Office, authorities believe the body to be that of the missing 23-year-old woman who went missing late Sunday afternoon along the Missouri River.
South Sioux City firefighters were originally called to a location on the northeast end of the Dible Soccer Complex around 5:33 p.m. Sunday after witnesses said the woman was pulled under the water by the river’s current. Rescue efforts involving South Sioux City, Dakota City and Sioux City fire and rescue units worked for several hours Sunday evening and made two searches Monday morning and afternoon along the Nebraska side of the river, but could not find a body.
Next of kin have been identified and the body has been transported to the Iowa Medical Examiners for formal identification. The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
