Attempted murder at local laundromat Tuesday

A 23-year-old man is in custody for an attempted murder at The Laundry Room and may be involved in other assaults at the same location.

According to the South Sioux City Police Department, Chantler Stewart, 23, entered the laundromat, located at 700 Dakota Avenue, and attacked an adult male, leaving him unresponsive, then returning minute later and cutting the victim’s throat.

Officers were called to the scene and found the victim unresponsive but breathing. He was taken to Unity Point Hospital in South Sioux and later airlifted to a Nebraska hospital due to serious injuries.

At about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, Stewart reportedly entered the laundromat and began aggressively assaulting the victim, taking items from the victim’s pockets, leaving the victim unresponsive. Stewart left and returned about 10 minutes later and was observed on video taking a knife and cutting the victim’s throat and taking his shoes.

Stewart was apprehended by authorities in Sioux City the following day on a Dakota County warrant for attempted murder, robbery, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and felon in possession of a deadly weapon.

South Sioux City Police reported that Stewart may have assaulted additional victims at the same location prior to Tuesday’s incident.
