Six area fire departments were called on to battle a pallet fire at Meyer Enterprises Wednesday evening.
According to South Sioux City Fire Chief Doug Koopman, the fire was discovered at about 6:33 p.m. at 532 Old Sawmill Road and quickly consumed the entire building, putting firefighters in a defensive strategy to contain the fire.
Fire departments from South Sioux City, Dakota City, Ponca, Homer and Iowa departments in Sioux City and Sgt. Bluff battled the blaze over about a three-hour period, with units staying on the scene overnight to extinguish any hot spots.
South Sioux City Police Department and Dakota County Sheriff’s staff were also on hand to assist with the blaze, with the county providing a drone for an overhead view of the scene. Gas and power company officials also were on hand to secure the scene, and the Dakota County Emergency Manager provided rehabilitation to fire crews working on the scene.
No civilian injuries were reported and two firefighters were taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening medical emergencies.
Local and state fire officials are investigating the scene. No dollar amount has been announced as of Thursday afternoon.
