A reporter-estimated 300 local residents gathered at Freedom Park on Thursday to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

More than 3,000 people died on the day terrorists felled the twin towers of the World Trade Center and crashed into the Pentagon, sparking the "War on Terror." Thursday's ceremony was put on by local firefighters and American Legion members and included the ceremonial burning of more than 3,500 worn out American flags.

Photos from Thursday's ceremony are by Michael Carnes. More photos to come in next week's editino of the Dakota County Star.
